VIETNAM TRAVEL TIPS

Visas for Vietnam

A visa is required for most nationalities to visit Vietnam. For some, they’ll give it to you for free on arrival. For others, you have to apply in advance, either online (e-Visa) or at an Embassy.

Whatever your nationality may be,  this page has all of the info you need!

Getting to Vietnam

Here are some Skyscanner links that will help you find flights to Vietnam:

You can click and change the departure and arrival countries (or cities) until you find a flight within your budget. If you have extra time and would like to explore* you might find a cheaper flight into bigger, busier airports like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Manila, Taipei, or Hong Kong. From these airports, there are often cheap direct flights to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) available from lowcost airlines like Air Asia, Vietjet Air, Jetstar, and Cebu Pacific. We have flown all of these airlines and were satisfied with their safety & quality.

* If you have time to explore, you might also consider flying from another SE Asia airport into Siem Reap in Cambodia, so that you can visit the amazing Angkor Wat temple complex. From there, you can easily take a bus (or even a boat down the Mekong River!) to Saigon. Also: there are a lot of other events being organized for November. We’ll announce them here as we confirm them or find out about them. The Cavemen are going to be on tour in the region… our pal Julien is putting together a weekender in Phnom Penh… etc!

Getting Around Saigon

Transportation in the city is easy & cheap via “Grab“, an smartphone app that works a lot like Uber and also includes the option to call a motorbike, which can slither through traffic jams for a fraction of the cost! Taxis are also cheap and quite easy — just be sure to take only Vinasun or Mailinh taxis, and that you know how to communicate your destination to the driver, who might not understand your language!

Accommodation

There are LOADS of great apartments available via sites like Airbnb and Agoda. Expect to pay as little as 10-20 Euros per night for a private apartment for two (!)    Hostel beds are, of course, even cheaper. Our recommendation at this point, however, is to wait until 2-3 months prior to the event, when our schedule is more solidified. Please don’t worry about being “near the venue” because (a) events will be happening in various parts of the city and (b) as previously mentioned, getting around on the back of Grab motorbikes is easy and cheap. (and pretty fun! Don’t let the traffic scare you – it is very chaotic, but actually it moves rather slowly and feels very safe)

Eating & Drinking

Vietnamese food is fresh, extremely tasty, and unbelievably cheap. It’s pretty hard to go wrong — but some local friends will compile a list of recommendations. Vietnamese “fresh beer” (bia hơi) must be tried — it is massively refreshing, and fabulously guzzleable!

a serving of Bún chả – 30,000₫ (around 1 Euro)
