THE KIDS, Living History of ‘77 Punk

Not many can say they were a part of the punk explosion that shook Europe at the end of the seventies and yet be still alive and kicking with the same attitude and the same energy 40 years later. The Kids are one of the few.

One of the best punk bands ever. But what really is awesome about them is that they’re totally humble about it.

We proudly present one rare exclusive interview with The Kids, a band with personality…

Pocos pueden presumir de haber formado parte de la explosión punk que sacudió Europa a finales de los 70 y seguir en pie con la misma actitud y la misma energía cuarenta años después. The Kids es una de esas pocas, una de las mejores bandas punk de todos los tiempos. Pero lo que realmente sorprende es que no alardean de ello.

The Kids debuted in full blast punk 77, but your music was rock and roll all the holes in your body. Where does that rhythm so rock and roll come from?

I don’t know , possibly I had it in me and thanks to punk rock it came out when we formed the Kids in may 1976.

The Kids debutasteis en plena explosión punk 77 pero vuestra música desprendía rock and roll por todos los orificios de su cuerpo. ¿De dónde viene ese ritmo tan rock and roll? 

No sé, posiblemente lo llevaba dentro y gracias al punk rock salió todo cuando formamos The Kids en Mayo de 1976.

It is said that you are the most famous Belgian punk band. Were you the pioneers? What other bands were there in Belgium when it all started? And which bands from other countries did you follow?

We were the first Belgian punk rock band in Belgium so that makes us pioneers.We did our first concert in September 1976 in Kapellen, a town near Antwerp.Later on, we met other bands like Chainsaw, X-ray pulsion and Mad Virgins from Brussels.From other countries, I liked the Damned and of course  The Sex Pistols.

Hay que decir que sois el grupo Belga de punk más famoso. ¿Fuisteis los pioneros? ¿Qué otras bandas había en Bélgica cuando empezó todo? ¿Y que bandas de otros países seguíais?

Fuimos la primera banda de punk rock de Bélgica, eso nos sitúa como pioneros. Nuestro primer concierto fue en Septiembre de 1976 en Kapellen, un pueblo en Antwerp. Poco después conocimos a bandas como Chainsaw, X-Ray Pulsion y Mad Virgins de Bruselas. De otros países me gustaban The Damned y, por supuesto, The Sex Pistols.

Did you ever had to tell your boss?: “I’m going on tour 2 months” How did a group like The Kids combine work and music?

Well, we actually never toured. As Danny de Haes our bass player was only 12 years old when we started and his brother Eddy, our drummer, 16 and both still went to school , we played only in the weekend.

Alguna vez tuvisteis que decirle a vuestro jefe: “Me voy de gira 2 meses” ¿Cómo hacía un grupo como The Kids para combinar trabajo y música?

Bueno, de hecho nunca hicimos giras. Danny de Haes, nuestro bajista, tenía 12 años cuando empezamos y su hermano Eddy, nuestro batería, 16; los dos iban al colegio, sólo tocábamos los fines de semana.

The Kids came from an earlier band called Crash, right? Did you all came from Crash? What kind of music did you play? Can we hear something?

I joined the band Crash in 1975, and became the songwriter/Rythm guitar player of the band.When I joined them we were with 5 members.We played rock music like Velvet Underground, my greatest influence at that time.After some months it was obvious that it was better that I would sing my own songs so the Singer and his friend the solo guitar player left the band.

¿The Kids venía de una banda anterior llamada Crash verdad? ¿Todos veníais de Crash? ¿Qué música hacíais? ¿Se puede escuchar algo?

Empecé a tocar con Crash en 1975 y me convertí en el compositor y guitarra rítmica de la banda. Cuando yo entré éramos 5 miembros. Tocábamos rock tipo Velvet Underground, mi mayor influencia por entonces. Tras varios meses se hizo obvio que era mejor que cantase mis propias canciones, así que el cantante y el guitarra solista dejaron la banda.

What happened to you for going from playing Velvet-style rhythms to play punk at full speed?

As a trio, we tried to figure out what kind of music we could play. Luckily, at that time I went to London and saw Eddie and the Hot Rods in the Marquee who were considered at that time as a punk rock band.The songs were fast and short and the crowd with the pogoing was incredible.So there I found the answer, we would play punk rock.You didn’t need to be a genius to play guitar and we didn’t need a solo guitar player. And I started to write our first punk rock songs like I wannna get a job in the city and this is rock’n roll.

¿Qué ocurrió para que dejarais de tocar ritmos estilo la Velvet para tocar punk a toda velocidad? 

Como trío intentamos averiguar qué estilo de música nos iba mejor. Afortunadamente por entonces fui a Londres y vi a Eddie and The Hot Rods en Marquee, que por entonces eran considerados como una banda de punk rock. Las canciones eran rápidas y cortas, y la gente montaba unos pogos increíbles. Así encontré la respuesta, tocaríamos punk rock. No necesitabas ser un genio para tocar la guitarra y no necesitábamos guitarra solista. Así comencé a escribir nuestras primeras canciones punk rock como I Wanna Get A Job In The City y This Is Rock’n’Roll.

From the Velvet Underground to The Sex Pistols… What happened socially to bring about this change?

The change was not so great, as I consider The Velvet Underground as prepunk rock. Same spirit of simple songs technically easy to play and attitude same as punk rock. An alternative way of life.

De la Velvet Underground a Los Sex Pistols… ¿Qué sucedió socialmente para que se produjera este cambio?

Yo creo que el cambio no fue tan grande. The Velvet Underground era pre-punk; el mismo espíritu de canciones simples y fáciles de tocar técnicamente, y la misma actitud que el punk rock. Un estilo de vida alternativo.

Which was the feeling of a young Belgian in 1977? What did it mean to be a punk teenager in 1977?

We against the world.Society was shocked at that time in 1976/1977 by the look of punks. I was held many times by police for identification just because how I looked.At some gigs, police were outside because they thought of us as being scums and expected riots. It was incredible from time to time.

¿Cuál era la sensación de un joven belga en 1977? ¿Qué significa el punk para un joven en 1977?

Nosotros contra el mundo. La sociedad se encontraba en shock debido a las pintas de los punks allá por 1976/1977. La poli me paró muchas veces para pedirme el carnet sólo por las pintas. En algunos bolos, la policía nos esperaba afuera porque pensaban que éramos escoria y se temían altercados. A veces era increíble. 

At that time was the punk music very linked to politics? What was the political idea?

It was against conservative society, so you can call that political.It was just you were supposed to be born, go to school,  get married and work, and walk between the lines.To be a good civilian. I always found there had to be more than that.

¿Estaba por entonces la música punk muy ligada a la política? ¿Cuál era la idea política?

Estaba en contra de la sociedad conservadora, podrías llamarlo político. Era como que supuestamente tenías que nacer, ir a la escuela, casarte e ir a trabajar, y caminar sin salirte de la línea. Ser un buen ciudadano. Siempre pensé que debía haber algo más que esto.

After your second album you start to evolve as a band. What does it´s mean that a band evolves? Why the general tendency of the evolution of bands is to start with a lot of energy and slow down over time? In other words.. Why always the first record is so good?!

I think it is because for the first album you are young, driven, everything is new and you put 20 years of life into one album.You can do that only once.Or else you just repeat yourself every time again.We released 2 albums in one year so I had the opportunity to do it twice and even then there is a difference between  ‘the Kids’ and ‘Naughty Kids’ , our second album.Also as a songwriter, you learn and you get other influences. You improve your guitar playing wich give you more options.

Tras vuestro segundo disco comenzáis a evolucionar como banda ¿Qué significa que una banda evolucione? ¿Por qué la tendencia general de la evolución de las bandas es empezar con mucha energía e ir bajando el ritmo con el tiempo? Dicho de una forma mejor.. ¡¿Por qué siempre el primer disco es tan bueno?!

Creo que es debido a que en tu primer disco eres joven, motivado, todo es nuevo y pones 20 años de vida en un sólo álbum. Sólamente puedes hacer ésto una vez, si no, símplemente te repites una y otra vez. Sacamos 2 discos en un año así que tuve la oportunidad de hacerlo 2 veces y aún así hay diferencia entre “The Kids” y “Naughty Kids”. También como compositor, aprendes y adquieres otras influencias. Y aprendes a tocar mejor lo que te da más opciones.

Which do you think has been your hit song?

How were the concerts? Where did you usually play? Which countries?

In Belgium, there’s no doubt it is There will be no next time, wich is a classic here. It was released in 1980 in our post-punk period and is more of a classic rock song.In other countries, it is really our first album ‘The Kids’ that is most popular.

In our first period from 1976 till 1986, we played mostly in Belgium.Remember there was no European Union at that time so playing in other countries was not easy because of customs , administration etc.

We had some concerts in the Netherlands , France and Germany but for just a few concerts.

¿Cual pensáis que ha sido vuestra canción de mayor éxito? ¿Cómo eran los conciertos? ¿Dónde solíais tocar?¿Qué países?

En Bélgica, sin duda, There Will Be No Next Time, que ya es un clásico aquí. Salió en 1980 en nuestra era post-punk y es un poco más un tema de rock clásico. En otros países realmente es “The Kids”, el primer álbum, el que tiene más éxito.

En nuestra primera época, de 1976 a 1986 tocamos mayormente en Bélgica. Todavía no había Unión Europea por lo que tocar en otros países era más complicado por las fronteras, administración, etc… Hicimos algunos bolos en Holanda, Francia y Alemania.

THE PUNK … Is it dead? It’s alive? Or was he born dead? Why do you think there is so much talk about this subject?

If punk is dead why do we play in Napoli?I think its like other music, the blues, hard rock , reggae, ska and so on.They all became popular at a certain time and then went in waves of popularity.Same for punk rock.We started in 1976 and we see now in 2017 when we play in Belgium or other countries that there is a punk rock scene and also punks, young and older, who are looking to live life in an alternative way cause they don’t fit in society as it is.So it is alive, cause dead means it isn’t there anymore.  

EL PUNK… ¿Está muerto? ¿Está vivo? ¿O nació muerto? ¿Por qué pensáis que se habla tanto de este tema?

¿Si el punk está muerto cómo es que tocamos en Nápoles? Creo que es como otros estilos de música, el blues, hard rock, reggae, ska, y así. Todos se popularizan en algún periodo y van y vienen. El punk rock igual. Comenzamos en 1976 y ahora en 2017 cuando tocamos en Bélgica u otro país vemos que hay una escena punk rock y muchos punks, jóvenes y viejos, que intentan vivir su estilo de vida alternativo porque no encajan en la sociedad tal y como es. Así que el punk está vivo; porque muerto significa que ya no está ahí.

Are there contradictions in punk or is it more like some people take it too seriously? That is, can it be a commercial product like any other or is it special?

What I hate most is that you get “punk rock ayatollahs”,who will tell you how to dress or what music you must listen to, or how popular or not punk rock must be.They are shit.

¿Existen contradicciones en el punk o es más un problema de quien se lo toma demasiado en serio? Es decir, ¿puede ser un producto comercial como cualquier otro o es especial?

Lo que más odio es que hayan “Ayatolahs” del punk rock, que te quieren decir cómo debes vestir o qué música debes oír y como de popular debe ser el punk rock. Son unos mierdas.

The Kids split up in In 1985 . What happened?

We split in 1986 because I evolved as a songwriter and wrote more and more songs that didn’t fit

for the Kids.We kind of lost our identity and felt we were at the end of the line.

En 1985 The Kids os separáis ¿Qué ocurrió?

Nos separamos en 1986 porque evolucioné como compositor y escribía más y más cosas que no encajaban en The Kids. De alguna manera perdimos nuestra identidad y nos sentimos que llegábamos a la última estación.

What must a band have to last in time?

Good songs that can stand in time, the spirit of enjoying to play, and the drive to play your songs everytime like it was the first time you play it.And of course have a bond with the rest of the band.

¿Qué debe tener una banda para que perdure en el tiempo?

Buenas canciones que perduren en el tiempo, el espíritu de disfrutar tocando, y la energía para tocar tus canciones cada vez como si fuese la primera vez. Y por supuesto, un fuerte vínculo con el resto de la banda.

After The Kids dissolution Ludo Mariman continues his musical career on his own, and also becomes a professional footballer! Did this happen before or after the band was dissolved? Which team and league did play Ludo?

I think there’s a mistake here.It’s true that as a young kid I wanted to become a professional football player and I managed to get in the second team of it FC Antwerp.But as I started to play guitar and got more and more interested in music it went down with football and up with music.

But, my brother Frank, who is 3 years younger became a professional football player and made it to the first team at the age of 16.

Tras la disolución de The Kids Ludo Mariman continúa su carrera musical en solitario, ¡y además se hace futbolista profesional¡ Esto sucedió antes o después de disolverse la banda? ¿En qué equipo y liga jugabas? 

Creo que te has equivocado. Es verdad que de niño quería ser jugador profesional y conseguí entrar en el segundo equipo de FC Antwerp. Pero cuando empecé a tocar la guitarra, me interesé más y más por la música y dejé el fútbol. Pero mi hermano Frank, que es 3 años más joven, se convirtió en jugador profesional y entró en el primer equipo a los 16.

Were there more punks on the team or in the league? Which position did you play? Were are you good player?

What about with the rest of the band? Can we know a little more about them?

I was left forward and a big fan of English football. That’s why I went to London regularly , to see English football and thanks to that I discovered punk rock on King’s road, the street where it started in England, and also the way to Chelsea stadium.

Luc our guitar player who is still with the Kids, played in different other bands.The brothers De Haes , they worked at a water-cleaning company, and they work there in 3 shifts, had because of that no time to play a lot in bands. Mostly they just rehearsed from time to time.

¿Había más punks en el equipo o en la liga? ¿De qué jugabas? ¿Eras  bueno? 

¿Qué ocurre con el resto de la banda? ¿Podemos saber un poco más de ellos?

Era delantero y un gran fan del fútbol inglés. Por eso solía ir a Londres regularmente, para ver el fútbol y gracias a eso descubrí el punk rock en King’s Road, la callé donde se originó en Inglaterra, y el camino al estadio del Chelsea.

Luc, nuestro guitarrista, que sigue en The Kids, tocó con unas cuantas bandas. Los hermanos De Haes, trabajaron en una empresa de limpieza y hacían 3 turnos; por lo tanto no tenían mucho tiempo para tocar, sólo ensayaban de vez en cuando.

Since your return you have not stopped playing. Have The Kids always been the same members? Who is The Kids today?

After that year we kept getting offers to play, but since it was too difficult for the De Haes brothers, me and Luc decided to find another drummer and bass player and play on as long they wanted us to play.So that 1-year tour is still going on.We changed drum and bass once and now we are 6 years with this line up: bass Yves van Lommel , drums Tim Jult , and Luc van de Poel and me on guitar.

Desde vuestro regreso no habéis parado de tocar. ¿The Kids siempre habéis sido los mismo integrantes? ¿Quién forma de The Kids en la actualidad?

Después de aquel año hemos seguido recibiendo ofertas, pero debido a que era complicado para los hermanos De Haes, Luc y yo decidimos buscar bajista y batería nuevos siempre que a ellos les preciese bien. Así que aquella gira de 1 año todavía sigue. Cambiamos de bajista y batería una vez y ahora llevamos 6 años con la misma formación: Yves van Lommel, bajo; Tim Jult, batería.

You reunited again in 1996. Before long you appear on television and in the soundtrack of a movie, Dief. What made you come back? Had something changed on your return? Were  you counting on a greater recognition, some favor status?

One day in 1995 there were 5 young punks from Paris at my door.They played in a band called the No Talents and they had their own label, and told me they were big fans of the Kids , and that the Kids were well known and appreciated all over the world. You know, internet was just beginning to appear so I knew nothing about it.They asked if there were unreleased songs of the early Kids. So I had one song, ‘No work’ we recorded for our first album but I decided not to use it.

And begged if we please would reunite so they could see us live.I talked with the other guys of the band and agreed to do a reunion tour for one year. So the EP was released with No work on the A-side, and on the b-side a couple of live songs from 1977.

In 1996 we started our reunion tour, 10 years after the split, and played in Belgium, Paris and a Germany. Playing in other countries was now much easier with the European Union.

Os juntáis de nuevo en 1996. Al poco tiempo aparecéis en televisión y en la banda sonora de un película, Dief. ¿Qué os hizo volver? ¿A vuestro retorno había cambiado algo? ¿Contabais a la vuelta con un reconocimiento mayor, cierto estatus a favor?

Un día en 1995 habían 5 punks de París en la puerta de mi casa. Tocaban en una banda llamada The No Talents y tenían su propio sello, y me dijeron que eran fans de The Kids, y que The Kids eran conocidos y apreciados en todo el mundo. Sabes, Internet estaba empezando a aparecer y yo no tenía ni idea del tema. Preguntaron si habían temas inéditos de los primeros tiempos de The Kids. Tenía un tema, No Work, que grabamos para el primer álbum pero que decidimos no usar.

Nos suplicaron que por favor nos reuniésemos para podernos ver en directo. Llamé a los demás y quedamos en hacer una gira de reunión durante un año. Así que sacamos el EP con No Work en la cara A, y en la B un par de temas en directo en el ‘77.

En 1996 empezamos la gira de reunión, 10 años después de separarnos, y tocamos en Bélgica, Paris y Alemania. Entonces fué mucho más fácil tocar en otros países con la unión europea.

In a way it could be said that you are legends of punk. That’s good or bad? Do people buy you lots of beer? Well, now we think that one of you, if not all of you, is a parent. What do the new kids think about their parents being legends of punk?

Some consider us legends and that’s nice as long as they buy us beers. Tim , Yves and me have a child , but they are under 5 years old so they have no real notice, although they sometimes come with us to a concert if we play at an early hour.

Luc has older children and they regularly come to see the Kids.They like it, to see their old dad , still playing rock’n roll.

En cierto modo se prodría decir que sois leyendas del punk. ¿Eso es bueno o es malo? ¿Os invitan a mucha cerveza? Y bueno, ahora suponemos que alguno de vosotros si no todos sois padres de familia ¿Qué piensan los nuevos The Kids (vuestros hijos) de que sus padres seas leyendas del punk?

Algunos nos consideran leyendas y no está mal, mientras nos inviten a cervezas. Tim, Yves y yo tenemos hijos, pero tienen menos de 5 años, por lo que no se enteran, pero a veces se vienen a algún concierto si no es muy tarde.

Luc tiene hijos más mayores y vienen regularmente a los conciertos. Les gusta ver a su viejo papá tocando rock’n’roll.

Since you started in 1977 until today many things have changed. What do you think about the idea of making an album today? Don’t you agre it’s better to record it yourself and upload it to the internet? And then to play!

We don’t think of making a new album.The music business has changed a lot over the years, and I found out that the greatest pleasure of playing in a band is to play live.There is always the expectation of people when they come to see us that we play our “classics” .It’s like you said, the best songs you write when you’re young and any new songs would be totally different as you evolve not only as a songwriter but also as a person.So, we prefer to play these great songs from the early years and we still enjoy playing them.

Desde que comenzasteis en 1977 hasta hoy han cambiado muchas cosas. ¿Qué pensáis sobre la idea de sacar un disco a día de hoy? ¿No creéis que merece más la pena grabarlo y subirlo uno mismo a internet? ¡Y luego a tocar!

No tenemos proyecto de sacar un disco nuevo. La industria musical ha cambiado mucho a lo largo de los años, y me he dado cuenta de que lo que más me gusta de tocar en una banda es tocar en directo. Siempre hay gran expectación por ver tocar nuestros clásicos. Es como dije, las mejores canciones las haces cuando ere joven y si hiciésemos canciones nuevas serían totalmente diferentes porque evolucionas no sólo como compositor sino también como persona. Por eso preferimos tocar esas canciones de los viejos tiempos, además seguimos disfrutando tocándolas. 

What future awaits to the vinyl record? The truth is that in recent years it has multiplied its manufacturing.

I think vinyl will still be popular , we can see that for ourselves cause our vinyl records sell much easier than our CD’s.

¿Qué futuro le espera al disco de vinilo? Lo cierto es que en los últimos años se ha multiplicado su fabricación.

Creo que el vinilo seguirá siendo popular, nosotros mismos lo vemos en nuestras ventas, vendemos más vinilo que cd’s.

After so much travel and experience, could you say that you have known from within the music industry? How is it? Could you advise those who do not know about it?

I like playing and I liked recording but my experience is that I want to stay far away from the industry.You must always be alert if you’re signing contracts or engage managers, cause musicians mostly are in it for the music, but for the industry it’s business and that not always goes together very well.

Después de tanto recorrido y experiencia, ¿podríais decir que habéis conocido desde dentro la industria musical? ¿Cómo es? ¿Podríais aconsejar sobre ella a quienes no la conocen ?

Me gusta tocar y me gustó grabar pero mi experiencia es que quiero mantenerme apartado de la industria discográfica. Tienes que estar siempre alerta si andas firmando contratos o contratando managers, porque los músicos están en ello por la música, pero la ndustria es un negocio y eso no siempre acaba bien.

What do you have in mind for The Kids in the future? Will the Kids be there for many years?

Well, we’ve been lucky to be able to play around the world the last 20 years and as long as we are physically ok and we enjoy playing I think we will be going on for some while.

¿Que tenéis pensado para The Kids en el futuro? ¿Habrá de The Kids para muchos años?

Bueno hemos tenido mucha suerte pudiendo tocar por todo el mundo los últimos 20 años y mientras nos encontremos bien físicamente y disfrutemos tocar, creo que seguiremos dándole un buen rato.
