ENTREVISTA A THE RIPPERS / INTERVIEW WITH THE RIPPERS

The Rippers, la última esperanza mediterránea tocarán en WE´RE LOUD Fest 2017, Nápoles.

The Rippers, the last mediterranean hope will play in WE´RE LOUD Fest 2017, Naples

The last thing I thought the day I saw you at The Wild Weekend 2004 was that, someday, I will be interviewing you. I remember that the Fest had been incredible, but after you were finished with your performance, a friend told me: The Rippers just showed us what it’s ALL about.

Hey! I am proud you liked our show. It’s been a long time, but anyway thanks a lot, to your friend too.…

Since then it’s been more than 10 years, and more than 15 since The Rippers first went on stage.

Yep… it’s true, so suppose you think we are old.

¿Podríais contarnos cómo y cuándo se formó The Rippers?

Explain how and when The Rippers was founded.

Well…, we met by chance during 2000. I played in a garage punk band and one day I received a call from Claudio (Ripper III), he had bought the record of my band and he wanted to book us a gig in his small town. We became friends immediately and when he came to live in my home town we started to play together…in the same garage where I played with my old band. In that period Claudio lived in the same flat with Alessandro (Ripper I)…one day we started to play just as a joke, we began in this way, after few months this game became serious and it started to involve us, so we decide to leave our bands and we started to play just with The Rippers.

Our idea was really clear, we wanted to abuse the R ‘n’ B with a particular attention to the European scene, we loved in particular the “black” and American R ‘n’ B played in Europe by bands of young and wild guys.

Sólo The Beatles eran tan prolíficos como vosotros, ¿no?

Han pasado cinco años desde “Better The Devil You Know”.

16 records since the first one in 2001, that’s about 1 per year. Only The Beatles were so prolific as you, weren’t they? How do you keep this pace?

Yeah, but many of these records  you’re talking about are 7 “ep. We’ve put out our fifth LP one month ago:“A GUT FEELING”. Five years passed since the last “Better The Devil You Know”. At the beginning maybe we were fastest and more productive but as you know, time is running and we all are more committed than before, and maybe even lazier.

How do The Rippers stay together? Because the truth is that nowadays most bands split-up way too soon. Why do you think this happens?

We are friends and this is the real thing; sometimes we fight, sometimes we talk about things we want and we must do and maybe it takes a while to have an agreement but we have a lot of fun all the time we are in tour or in the recording studio and so on, and I like a lot to play with these 3 motherfuckers, and I think it’s the same for the others too.

All your records keep the same line: in-your-face garage punk rhythm’n’ blues. Have you ever thought about changing the style? Try something different?

Yeah man, and we’ve done it. You have to listen our new album and you’ll understand what I mean. We have started this kind of changing whit “BETTER DEVIL YOU KNOW” and we went ahead with the new record, but you have to listen; all the fuckin’ assholes who read these lines must listen to the new album. I think it’s the best we’ve recorded since now.

THE RIPPERS “A Gut Feeling” LP by The Rippers¿En alguna ocasión habéis sido demasiado cafres para la escena sixties? ¿Cómo os definiríais The Rippers después de tantos años?

Are you too gnarly for the sixties scene? Well, maybe this is not a good question, let’s try again. How would you define The Rippers style after so many years?

You know? I like what you said. We’re too gnarly sometimes for the sixties scene, hahahahahaha… We don’t give a fuck in being defined in this way or in this other way; we let these things to others and we prefer to think about what we have to do and what we want to do depends only on us. We don’t like having suggestions out of the band. That’s our way, and I believe we have right heads and right hands to do it.

Maybe you won’t believe it, but most people flip out when they hear that you’re from Sardinia. How was it having a garage band in Sardinia in 2001? and now, are there other bands? Where did you find your influences?

All 4 rippers already had other bands before 2001, records, turntables, clubs; these things have always been in Sardinia. We live on a small island, we are close to Africa, but we haven’t a ring on the nose… hahahaha… There are a lot of bands actually, but maybe good live-clubs are not so many at this time, so we like to go to play around outside our island whenever we can.

What’s it like to have a band in Sardinia? Is it easy to travel from there ?

It’ easy, but very expensive most of the time, so we started asking for money to answer to the interviews too; hey man, you’re in debt with us now.

Are there young, local bands interested in this music or are you Sardinia’s last hope?

We hope not to be the last hope. During these years there always been other good bands, and there are a lot of different bands now; we’ll see…

How’s life in Sardinia? What’s the best from the island?

I really enjoy living here, life is very easy; we got some problems but, please tell me a place where there are no problems. I love the sea, I love the weather, I really love the food and drinks, and we got a lot of friends here, and our life too.

In your Bandcamp is not possible to hear your music (you can hear it on the Slovenly Bandcamp). Can you explain why?

No I can’t ’cos Claudio manages this thing; anyway, thanks for the info, we’ll try to do something  soon.

The Rippers first recording was a cassette recorded in your garage on 2001, and a year later was released by Shake Your Ass Records on 7”. Was it straight from the cassette, or did you recorded it again?

Do you still have any copy of the cassette?

Yep, everything is correct, all the songs were recorded in just one track, and yes, our first 7”ep was taken straight from that cassette. I believe I got a copy somewhere.

The songs from the cassette are the same ones on the 7” or was something left out?

I try to remember, but I think there was 4 more tracks in that demo-tape, and we’ve used the other tracks in some record with other songs in the 2nd and 3rd 7” ep.

How was that garage? Was it also rehearsal room? Do you still rehearse there?

It was cool and very wide. We did everything in there: recording sessions, try out, and sometimes small gigs for 30/40 people, and for sure I was there with some pretty girl too. We always left our equipment there, everything was always ready for some action.

With so many releases in a row, how do you manage to improve your work? To keep the standard, or is this not really important?

This is really important for us. We always try to evolve our music, find something new, something we like, different arrangements, different melodies, different sounds; it’s been so long since we started. Before we were less careful about these things, now these things give us the greatest vibrations.

How did you learn about Slovenly Recordings? We mean, How did you meet Pete Slovenly?

I remember that several years ago Pete was playing as a DJ in a club in Rome. A great friend of our was there when Pete started to play some songs from our first LP, so they talked about our band. Pete had our contact and we became friends few months later, and after about a year we recorded the first 7″ for Slovenly Recordings.

What does a song need to be a Rippers song and make it to the final repertoire?

Hard question. The most important thing is that the songs we play should please all of us. There is no particular line, we try to do the best that we can with the ideas that we have in that particular moment.

You have sixties style but most of your songs are under 3 minutes… Is there some Punk in there? Which bands do you like?

AZZZZZ! super hard question, man! the list is endless, and it’s constantly changing. In the sixties there was a lot of bands playing with a punk attitude: dirty, fast and wild, and they did not turn on radio and television; so it was in the sixties, in the 80’s, in the 90’s, and today is exactly the same thing.

¿Cómo es un concierto de The Rippers?

Muchísima acción, muy caluroso, sudoroso, estruendoso, volumen muy alto.

What is a Rippers gig like?

Lots of action, very hot, very sweaty, noisy, loud volume.

Does being Mediterranean contribute to the band’s atmosphere? What do you like the most about the Mediterranean? Would The Rippers be the same band if you were living in Moscow?

I really, really don’t know. I love to stay with my ass inside the beautiful Sardinia’s sea and I can certainly said that I prefer to live here. Too much cold in Moscow.

You are in this year’s WE’RE LOUD FEST in Napoli. Do you feel kinda special playing at “home”?

There are nice situations where we like to play, and others where we like less, but this does not depend on where we are. Everything can be great in Sardinia, Italy, Europe, USA, and at the same time everything can be very shitty. It does not depend on the place, it depends on the different situations and the people you meet.

What do you think Napoli can bring to WE’RE LOUD? What pleases you the most about going there and what are you most excited to do there, besides from playing?

Well,  Napoli is a wonderful town. I’ve spent there one month about 10 years ago and I’ve been back there several times during the past 10 years for different reasons. Every time I had some nice days and lots of fun, the food is great and the folks are crazy. Do you think this is the right mix for a rock ‘n’ roll fest?

Me encanta.

What could you recommend to someone who’s coming for the first time?

An area called Spacca-Napoli. I love it.

What do you think WE’RE LOUD FEST brings to the festivals’ scene? Why is it special? What caught your attention?

I think it’s actually one of the best festival around Europe. We like a lot to play in this festival, it’s organized by Pete and Slovenly recordings and this is a guarantee for us: a festival organized by people who love the same music. They do everything with the right attitude, and all this work is reflected in the lineup. It’s every time full of bands that I love. What else can I ask for?

Comprad “A Gut Feeling”… Comprad “A Gut Feeling”… Comprad “A Gut Feeling”… Comprad “A Gut Feeling”… Comprad “A Gut Feeling”… Comprad “A Gut Feeling”… Vale, ya paro!

As for us, that’s all. We thank you very much, and if you want to say something to the good people out there, now is the time.

Buy “A GUT FEELING”….. Buy “A GUT FEELING”….. Buy “A GUT FEELING”….. Buy “A GUT FEELING”….. Buy “A GUT FEELING”….. Buy “A GUT FEELING”…..ok, now I can stop!

Gracias por tantos años de música!! Nos vemos el 6 de Oct en Nápoles

Nos vemos en Octubre!
